Renee and Marcus Proposal at Hutch

I was thrilled when Marcus contacted me about photographing his planned proposal moment. I have known Marcus as a co-worker and friend over a little over a year and was delighted to meet his date Renee at a Christmas party. They seemed so wonderful together, so I was totally on board when the news of a ring and proposal came through a text! We quickly co-ordinated and the results are so fun! I will let them tell the story in their own words - Vivian

Marcus

When did you know Renee was the one?
I realized I wanted to live my life with Renee because she truly makes life better. Her kind heart and amazing humor made me realize that living life along side each other would be a lot of fun.

What was the craziest part of planning your surprise proposal?
Coordinating. My plans were all jacked up. We were going to go to a bar we went on our first date but it was closed so I ended up walking around a DSW pretending to not be freaking out as she’s just casually checking out shoes. I was sweating a lot all day.

How did you decide what to do for the proposal?
On our second date we were killing time at target (killing time seems to be a part of our relationship) and we were looking at creating cards and she was telling me how much she liked greeting cards. I had a fleeting thought that if this worked out it would be a fun way to ask her to marry me but also that was way too early. After that we started writing greeting cards to each other and started a fake greeting card company with each other. Anyway I updated my idea from target to hutch

Why did you choose to have photos of your proposal moment?
I chose to have photos to capture the moment of course! When thinking about when we’re older and if/when we have kids it would be cool to see. I wish I had a photo of my folks getting engaged. Marriage photos are one thing but true life moments of your parents when they were younger and when they got engaged sounded really cool.

When did you know Marcus was the one?
It is hard to pinpoint an exact moment when I knew Marcus was "the one,” because we just hit is off from the get-go. On our very first date, we spent the whole time laughing and bantering. It was the first time I ever felt like “woah Renee, you need to NOT mess this up.” Haha. It wasn’t long before Marcus’s kind heart and contagious personality began to show and ultimately I think the time we spent just the two of us road tripping to CO was when I fell hard hard and knew he was going to be a very significant person to me.

What was a standout moment of the proposal for you?
Marcus is a wonderful story teller, and the way he brought our story together at that moment was incredible. The hand made cards was an inside thing we did for each other since our second date, so having built our own card stand and writing me another very intentional card was my favorite thing. Aside from that, how he managed to get our whole family into a broom closet as a final surprise was just the cherry on top!

When did you realize Marcus was proposing?
Marcus is very intentional, so it is not out of the ordinary for him to make grand gesture. The moment I realized he was proposing wasn’t until I noticed his hands shaking while he read the card and heard the camera in the background.

What do you think about having photos from the moment?
Having the incredible photos taken gives visual to our engagement. The moment goes by so quickly and having them to look back on let’s me feel those butterflies again. There are little expressions captured that I am so happy to just see how genuinely happy we both were in the moment.

Anything else fun to share?
Vivian and Machaela were so good at blending in, even when I noticed there was a photographer there, I thought she was there too photograph the space. I was always skeptical about how photographers pulled off being there without it being glaringly obvious. Not only that, but they had our photos to us so fast that being able to share the experience right away was perfect.
