Clothing tips for family photos
You've booked your family photos but now the big question...What are you going to wear?
I take pictures of everyone else but the minute you point a camera in my face I can be really awkward and forget everything I know.
Monday afternoon I was getting ready to have my photo taken for Midland Pictures - I also produce video with some pretty awesome and talented guys, check us out if you haven't. I didn't plan ahead at all...
1. Be yourself
Sounds cliche, I get it. I had zero anxieties about having my photo taken, until an hour before. I realized I had put ZERO thought into what I was going to wear. I was trying on any and every possibility, sweating my ass off, and trying to throw on some makeup. This is not a new thing for me, as a teenager I would have screamed, "Just leave me home, I'm not going." Before reaching that point, I literally stopped, took a step back and thought, "What do I tell people when they ask me what to wear?" Rule number one is to always be yourself so you are comfortable in what you're wearing. So I navigated to a black a v-neck and my current go-to jacket. I spiced it up with some flare jeans and pink mules - not an everyday for me; I'm a skinny-jeans-comfy-shoes kind of girl. I was comfortable in this, and as I walked out the door I felt like myself, just a little dressier.
2. Dress the hardest person first
Did I say hardest? I meant pickiest, start with their outfit and build out from there.
3. Think coordinate, not match
Not everyone has to match. No need to put everyone in all black or all white. Pick a color scheme, or two colors and work from there.
4. Use textures and patterns, not characters
Mix it up, don't be afraid to use patterns and accessories. Different textures can be your friend! Characters like Mickey Mouse and Sponge Bob aren't really your friends; they are a distraction.
5. Use your home as a guide
Do you hang neutral earth tones, or bold colors in your home? Think about where you want to hang these photos. Let the photos work as pieces of art, use the decor in your home to be your guide.
